A contact-specific ringtone can help you recognise a caller before looking at the screen. Start with one person and a clearly different tone; it is easier to judge the result than changing your whole address book at once.
Set the contact tone
Open Contacts, select the person, choose Edit, then Ringtone. Select the tone you want and finish saving the contact. This changes the chosen contact rather than the default ringtone for everybody.

Check a real call
Ask that person to call you at a convenient time. Compare the caller shown on the screen with the contact you edited. Write down what happened before trying another change, so you can undo your own edits in order.
If you hear nothing
Check whether the ringer is silenced. Apple describes a Control Center mute control on Action Button models and the physical Ring/Silent switch on other models. A distinctive tone is not a promise that every call will be audible in every phone state.
Keep your tone choices manageable
Use a short personal list: who received a tone, which tone you selected, and whether the test call worked. Do not include private phone numbers in a public troubleshooting post. This guide covers ordinary cellular calls; do not assume another calling app follows the same setting.
