Start with a quick test
Use another phone to call your number. Watch the screen and note whether the call appears, the phone vibrates, or no alert happens at all. This separates a sound problem from a network or calling problem. If calls do not reach the phone, contact your carrier rather than changing ringtone settings.
1. Raise the ringtone volume
Press a volume button, expand the volume panel and raise the Ringtone or Ring & notification slider. Media volume controls videos and music, so increasing it may not make incoming calls louder.
2. Turn off Silent and Vibrate modes
Open Quick Settings and select Sound mode. Some phones show separate icons for sound, vibrate and mute. Make sure the active mode includes audible ringing.
3. Review Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb can silence calls based on schedules, people or repeated-caller rules. Open Settings > Notifications or Sound > Do Not Disturb. Temporarily turn it off for testing, then adjust its exceptions rather than leaving important calls blocked.
4. Select the ringtone again
Open Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone and choose a built-in tone. If that works, the previous custom file may have been moved, deleted or damaged. Re-add a local copy after confirming it plays in the Files app.
5. Check both SIM cards
Dual-SIM phones may have separate ringtone controls. Confirm that the tone and volume are configured for the SIM receiving the call. Also verify which number the caller is using.
6. Disconnect Bluetooth
A connected car, headset or speaker can change how call audio behaves. Turn Bluetooth off briefly and repeat the test. If the phone rings normally, review the connected device's call-audio settings.
7. Check contact-specific settings
If the problem affects only one person, open that contact and inspect its ringtone. Remove a silent tone, reselect the default sound and confirm the number is not blocked. Merge duplicate versions of the same contact.
8. Move the MP3 into the Ringtones folder
Open the Files app and copy the audio to Internal storage > Ringtones. Reopen the ringtone picker or restart the phone so Android can scan it. Do not rely on a cloud-only file, because the system needs local access when a call arrives.
9. Confirm the file format
Try a normal MP3 that plays in other apps. Renaming a file extension does not convert the audio. If the file is unusual or corrupt, export a fresh copy from a trusted editor.
10. Restart and update the phone
A restart refreshes sound services and media indexing. Install available system and Phone app updates, then test again before changing more settings.
11. Check app and notification behaviour
Calls received through WhatsApp, Teams or another internet-calling app use that app's notification settings. Open App info > Notifications and confirm incoming-call alerts and sound are allowed.
12. Reset sound settings carefully
Some manufacturers offer Reset all settings, which can restore sound preferences without deleting personal files. Read the confirmation screen closely because Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other preferences may also reset. Back up important settings first.
Why a downloaded ringtone disappears
The file may have been cleaned from Downloads, stored on a removed SD card or kept only inside another app's private folder. Save an authorised copy in the Ringtones folder and avoid storage-cleaner rules that delete it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone vibrate but not ring?
The phone may be in Vibrate mode, ringtone volume may be zero, or Do Not Disturb may allow vibration but silence sound.
Why does only one contact have no ringtone?
That contact may have a silent custom tone, a duplicate record or a number mismatch. Set it back to Default and test again.
Will clearing storage delete my ringtones?
It can. Do not clear app or system storage unless you understand what it removes. Keep authorised audio backed up.
When to seek help
If built-in ringtones remain silent after these checks, test the speaker with an alarm and media. A speaker or software fault may need manufacturer support. Describe which tests worked so the technician can narrow down the cause.
