# How to Change Your Lock Screen Clock Style on iPhone and Android
Your lock screen is the first thing you see every time you pick up your phone, and the giant clock sits right at the center of it. Most people never touch it — but every major phone now lets you restyle that clock: new fonts, new colors, thicker or taller numerals, even an analog face on Samsung. It takes about a minute, and it is one of the fastest ways to make a phone feel like yours.
On iPhone: font, color, thickness, and size
Clock customization arrived with iOS 16, so first make sure your iPhone is updated. Then:
- Wake the phone and stay on the Lock Screen — unlock with Face ID or your passcode, but do not swipe up to the Home Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the Customize button appears at the bottom.
- Swipe to the Lock Screen you want to restyle (if you have several), tap Customize, then tap Lock Screen when asked.
- Tap the time. A Font & Color panel slides up.
- Pick one of the built-in font styles, then tap a color circle — swipe all the way right on the color row for a full custom color wheel.
- If you do not want standard Arabic numerals, tap the globe icon to switch the numeral style.
- Tap the X to close the panel, then tap Done in the top-right corner.
On recent iOS versions you can also drag the bottom corner of the clock box to make it taller, and drag the slider to make the font heavier or lighter. Apple's own lock screen guide documents the same flow: tap the time to change the font, color, and style.
If the Customize button never appears, your phone is likely still on iOS 15 or older: clock styling does not exist before iOS 16.
On Samsung Galaxy: layouts, fonts, color, and position
Samsung gives you the most room to play. The fastest route uses the visual editor:
- Open Settings and tap Lock screen.
- Tap Edit lock screen (near the top on recent One UI versions) — or simply touch and hold the Lock Screen itself, as Samsung's community guide confirms.
- Tap the clock in the live preview.
- Swipe through the layout row to choose a digital or an analog design.
- Set the font, color, and size. There is usually an automatic color option that adapts to your wallpaper.
- Drag the clock up or down in the preview to reposition it away from busy parts of your wallpaper.
- Tap Done to apply.
This editor is the same one that controls the clock on the Always On Display, and you can also fine-tune the AOD clock separately under Settings, then Lock screen, then Always On Display. A full walkthrough of the One UI editor, including how moving the clock helps readability, is in this Samsung lock screen clock guide.
On Pixel and other Android phones: styles, color, and size
On Google Pixel phones running Android 14 or later:
- Long-press an empty spot on the Home Screen and tap Wallpaper & style.
- Swipe the preview over to the Lock screen and tap Clock.
- Swipe left or right through the available clock styles — bold digital, minimalist, analog-style, and more.
- Tap Clock color & size: pick a color swatch (or the eyedropper to sample a color from your wallpaper), then choose Dynamic (grows and shrinks with notifications) or Small (fixed compact size).
- Changes apply instantly; back out when you are happy.
On newer Pixels, Google added a dedicated Clock menu under Wallpaper & style with eight distinct clock types and a width/thickness option for the first style, per 9to5Google's Pixel guide. On Android 13 the option is simpler — Settings, then Display, then Lock screen, then Double-line clock. Full style customization is an Android 14 feature, so if your options look thin, check Settings, then About phone, then Android version. This Android clock customization walkthrough covers the Android 14 flow step by step.

Match the clock to your wallpaper
A restyle only looks good if you can actually read the time. A few rules of thumb:
- Pick a clock color that contrasts with the busiest part of the wallpaper — the right wallpaper size also keeps the clock area crisp instead of stretched.
- On Samsung, use the automatic color option when you swap wallpapers often; it keeps the clock readable without a manual redo.
- On iPhone, a photo with a clear subject works well with Depth Effect, letting the subject overlap the clock — turn it off if the time gets hard to scan at a glance.
- Thin, minimal fonts look elegant but can vanish on bright skies; if you use one, keep the weight slider toward the heavier end.
FAQ
Can I remove the lock screen clock completely?
No. Neither Apple nor Samsung nor Google provides a setting to turn the main lock screen clock off — you can make it subtler with a small style and a soft color, but the time display is part of the lock screen design.
Can I move the clock to the bottom of the lock screen?
On Samsung, yes: open the Edit lock screen preview and drag the clock wherever it fits. On iPhone and Pixel, no — the clock stays in its fixed area near the top, and you can only adjust its font, color, and size.
Why don't I see any clock customization options?
You are almost certainly on an older software version: iPhone needs iOS 16 or later, Pixel needs Android 14 for full styles, and Samsung needs a recent One UI release. Update the phone, then look again — the options appear only after the update.
Does restyling the clock change anything on my Home Screen?
No. The clock style lives with its Lock Screen and does not touch your Home Screen icons, widgets, or wallpaper. On iPhone, each saved Lock Screen can even carry a different clock style.
Can I use a font I downloaded myself for the clock?
Not natively. iPhone and Pixel only offer their built-in clock fonts, and Samsung's choices come from the system and themes. Third-party lock screen apps can fake custom fonts, but they run outside the real lock screen and usually bring ads or lag — the built-in styles are the safe route.
