Your WhatsApp DP (display picture) is the first thing anyone sees next to your name in chats, groups, and calls. Most people set one once and forget it for years, even though changing it takes less than a minute and WhatsApp lets you do it as often as you like. No computer and no extra app is needed — everything happens inside WhatsApp itself.
What a WhatsApp DP actually is
"DP" is community slang for your WhatsApp profile photo — in the app's own settings the feature is simply called your profile photo. It is worth knowing the official name if you ever need to contact WhatsApp support, because the slang will not get you anywhere with them.
Change your DP on iPhone
- Open **WhatsApp**.
- Tap the **Settings** tab in the bottom-right corner.
- At the top, tap your **name** to open your profile.
- Under the profile photo, tap **Edit**.
- Tap **Choose Photo** to pick a picture from your Photos library, or **Take Photo** to snap a new one with the camera.
- Move and zoom the photo inside the square frame until it looks right, then tap **Choose**.
Change your DP on Android
- Open **WhatsApp**.
- Tap the **three-dot menu** in the top-right corner, then tap **Settings**.
- At the top, tap your **name** to open your profile.
- Tap the **camera (or pencil/edit) icon** on your current photo. If you have never set one, tap the photo placeholder instead.
- Choose **Gallery** to pick an existing photo, **Camera** to take a new one, or **Avatar** to use a personalised avatar.
- Adjust the crop inside the frame, then tap **Done**.
The steps are nearly identical on both platforms — the only real difference is how you reach Settings.
Change it from WhatsApp Web or the desktop app
- Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
- Click your **profile picture** in the top-left corner.
- Click the photo itself to upload a new image from your computer.
- Crop it and confirm.
If you do this on a shared or public computer, remember to log out of WhatsApp Web when you are finished.
Use an avatar instead of a photo
If you would rather not use a real photo, WhatsApp offers an **Avatar** option in the same photo menu. You design a cartoon version of yourself once, and it behaves exactly like a regular DP — cropped, privacy-controlled, and synced everywhere.
Remove your photo
Pick **Delete photo** (or **Remove photo**) from the same options menu. WhatsApp goes back to the default grey silhouette, so contacts see a clean placeholder rather than a broken or blank image.
Pick a photo that survives the circle crop
WhatsApp forces every photo into a square frame that displays as a circle, so the source image matters more than the setting:
- **Start with a face-forward photo.** Pictures where the face is centred survive the crop; a small face in the corner of a wide landscape photo becomes unreadable.
- **Use a sharp, high-resolution original.** WhatsApp compresses every upload, so a photo that is already small goes blurry fast. A photo around 640×640 pixels or larger gives the best results.
- **Plain backgrounds win.** Busy backgrounds turn into visual noise at thumbnail size — inside a chat list, your photo is barely a centimetre wide.
- **Study the crop screen.** It shows exactly what everyone else will see. If the face is cut off, zoom out and reposition before confirming.
Control who can see your DP
Your photo is not automatically private. To limit it:
- Go to **Settings → Privacy → Profile photo**.
- Choose **Everyone**, **My contacts**, **My contacts except…**, or **Nobody**.
**Nobody** means even your saved contacts see only the silhouette. **My contacts except…** lets you hide your photo from specific people without blocking them.
Make WhatsApp fully yours
A fresh DP pairs nicely with the rest of your personalisation:
- How to change your WhatsApp chat wallpaper — match your chat backgrounds to the new photo.
- How to change your WhatsApp notification sound — give messages their own tone so you hear who is writing without looking.
Troubleshooting
**My new photo is not showing up.**
Restart the app and check your internet connection — the upload needs an active data connection. On Android, clearing the app's cache can also unstick a frozen upload.
**My photo looks blurry.**
The source photo was too small. Choose a larger original (640×640 pixels or more), since WhatsApp compresses everything it uploads.
**My face is cut off.**
The crop screen was skipped or rushed. Change the photo again and zoom out or reposition inside the frame before tapping Done.
**A contact says they cannot see my new photo.**
They may be running an old app version with a cached copy, or your privacy setting is **My contacts** while you are not saved in their contacts. Update the app on both ends and double-check **Settings → Privacy → Profile photo**.
FAQs
**Does WhatsApp notify my contacts when I change my DP?**
No. Unlike status updates, a DP change is completely silent — contacts only notice it when they open your chat or profile.
**How often can I change it?**
As often as you like. There is no limit.
**Does the change sync to WhatsApp Web and my other devices?**
Yes. Your profile photo is tied to your account, so the desktop app and linked devices pick it up automatically.
**Can I use a GIF or video as my DP?**
Not natively. Animated images are uploaded as stills — the motion is dropped. If you want something animated, use a status update instead.
**Can someone screenshot my DP?**
WhatsApp blocks profile-photo screenshots on many Android devices now, but nothing stops someone from photographing their screen with a second phone — only set a photo you are comfortable being shared.
Limitations
- The square/circular crop is mandatory — a full-width photo is not possible.
- No native animated (GIF or video) profile photos.
- You can only change your own photo. WhatsApp does not let you set a custom photo for a contact.
