Here's the thing nobody tells you about WhatsApp chat wallpapers: only you ever see yours. Changing yours never notifies anyone and never changes what the other person sees.

That makes it the lowest-stakes customization on your phone — pure self-indulgence, zero social consequences. And it's still worth doing, because your chat background is the image or colour sitting behind every message you send and receive. A calm solid colour for work chats, a favourite photo for family, a darker background for late-night scrolling.

Wallpaper vs. chat theme — not the same thing

WhatsApp groups wallpaper together with chat themes, but they're not the same thing:

If you only want a new background, change the wallpaper on its own. If you want the whole chat to match, pick a theme. Both live in the same part of Settings.

One background for every chat

This sets the default background for every chat that doesn't have its own custom wallpaper.

Current versions (iPhone and Android)

1. Open WhatsApp and go to **Settings** (on iPhone, the Settings tab at the bottom; on Android, the three-dot menu, then **Settings**).
2. Tap **Appearance** (on some versions, tap **Chats** instead).
3. Tap **Default chat theme**, then **Wallpaper**.
4. Choose a background:
- **Preset wallpapers** — WhatsApp's built-in images, usually split into bright and dark sets.
- **Solid colours** — a single flat colour. The simplest option for readability.
- **Your own photo** — choose **Choose from gallery** (Android) or **Choose from Photos** (iPhone) and pick any image on your phone.
5. Preview it, adjust the brightness if the option appears, then tap **Set** (or the checkmark).

Older versions

  1. Go to **Settings → Chats → Wallpaper** (Android) or **Settings → Chats → Chat Wallpaper** (iPhone).
  2. Tap **Change**, pick a category — Bright, Dark, Solid Colours, or My Photos — then choose an image.
  3. Tap **Set Wallpaper** (Android) or **Set** (iPhone).

Whichever path your phone shows, the result is the same.

A different background for one chat

A per-chat wallpaper overrides the default for that conversation only. It's practical as well as cosmetic: give work chats one colour and family chats another, and you'll spot a wrong-chat mistake before you send the message.

On iPhone

  1. Open the chat, then tap the **contact or group name** at the top.
  2. Tap **Wallpaper & Sound** (on some versions, **Chat Theme**).
  3. Choose a wallpaper or theme, preview it, then tap **Set**.

On Android

  1. Open the chat, then tap the **three-dot menu** at the top right.
  2. Tap **Wallpaper** (on some versions, **Chat theme**).
  3. Choose a wallpaper, preview it, then tap **Set Wallpaper**.

To remove one later, go back to the same screen and choose the default wallpaper or the remove/reset option.

Making your own photo actually look good

Any photo on your phone can become a chat background, but a few choices decide whether it looks good or fights with your messages:

AI wallpapers, if your phone has them

Newer versions can generate a wallpaper from a text description, or restyle one of your photos, through **Default chat theme → Wallpaper → Create with AI**. Meta AI experiences are only available in limited countries and languages, so the option may simply not appear on your phone. If it does, describe the image you want, preview the result, and tap **Set**.

If it looks wrong

Resetting to the default

  1. Go to **Settings → Appearance → Default chat theme → Wallpaper** (or **Settings → Chats → Wallpaper** on older versions).
  2. Choose **Default Wallpaper** and tap **Set**.

Resetting the global wallpaper doesn't always clear per-chat wallpapers — remove those inside each chat.

Quick answers

**Does changing my chat wallpaper use extra data or storage?** No. Preset wallpapers and solid colours are part of the app, and your own photos use copies already on your phone.

**Can I set a video or animated GIF as a chat wallpaper?** No. Chat wallpapers are still images only: a preset, a colour, or a photo.

**Does a wallpaper change my chat bubbles too?** Only if you pick a full chat theme. Changing the wallpaper on its own leaves your bubble colour alone.

**Can I set different wallpapers for light mode and dark mode?** On versions that offer separate light and dark wallpaper pickers, yes.

**Will my wallpaper sync to WhatsApp on my computer?** Not necessarily. Wallpaper controls on linked devices are more limited than on your phone.

The limits in brief

A good chat wallpaper is one you stop noticing: it makes messages easier to read, tells chats apart at a glance, and quietly matches your mood. Start with one calm default for all chats, then give your two or three most-used conversations their own colours.

Pair your new background with the rest of your WhatsApp setup: change your WhatsApp notification sound so you hear the difference between chats, change your WhatsApp DP without losing quality so your profile photo stays sharp, or hide your WhatsApp DP from selected contacts for tighter control over who sees it.
