What you need
Apple's GarageBand app can turn an audio file or your own GarageBand song into an iPhone ringtone. Keep the source file in the Files app or another location GarageBand can access. Use audio you created or have permission to use; protected streaming tracks may not be available for import.
Ringtone options and button positions can change slightly with iOS or GarageBand updates, but the basic workflow is import, trim, save and share as a ringtone.
Import the audio into GarageBand
- Install and open GarageBand from the App Store.
- Start a new Audio Recorder project.
- Switch to Tracks view.
- Open the Loops browser.
- Choose Files and browse items from the Files app.
- Press and drag the authorised audio file into the track area.
If the file is dimmed or unavailable, confirm it is stored locally and in a supported format. A protected song from a subscription service may not be usable as a ringtone file.
Trim the ringtone
Drag the edges of the audio region to keep the most recognisable section. Start close to the first useful sound so the ringtone does not waste time in silence. Listen through the phone speaker and reduce any harsh beginning or ending.
Keep the project short. GarageBand can shorten a longer project during ringtone export, but editing the exact section yourself gives you more control.
Export from GarageBand
- Tap the navigation button and return to My Songs.
- Touch and hold the project.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Ringtone.
- Enter a short, clear name.
- Tap Export.
After export, GarageBand may offer to use the sound immediately. You can select it as the standard ringtone, assign it to a contact, or finish and choose it later in Settings.
Select the ringtone in iPhone Settings
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone. Your exported sound should appear with the available tones. Tap it to make it the default call ringtone.
To use it for one person, open Contacts, select the contact, tap Edit, choose Ringtone and save your selection.
If the audio will not import
- Save a local copy in the Files app.
- Confirm the file plays outside GarageBand.
- Use an ordinary supported audio format.
- Check whether the song is protected or available only through a streaming subscription.
- Restart GarageBand and try a new project.
Do not use unknown converter sites for private recordings. A reputable offline editor or GarageBand itself is safer for personal audio.
If the exported ringtone is missing
Return to My Songs and confirm that export completed without an error. Use a unique name so it is easy to find. Reopen Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, or restart the iPhone if the list has not refreshed.
Privacy and copyright tips
Avoid spoken ringtones that announce private details in public. Do not use a real person's cloned voice without consent or publish copyrighted audio you do not control. A custom ringtone made for personal use still requires a lawful source file.
