Give one person a recognisable text alert
To set a different text tone for one contact on iPhone, open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, then choose Text Tone. Pick a sound and save the change. Use Text Tone for messages; the separate Ringtone setting changes incoming calls. You can start with an included sound, so you do not need to buy a tone just to try this.
This guide covers Apple's contact and Messages settings. It does not promise to change the sounds inside WhatsApp, Telegram or another messaging app. Those apps have their own controls.
Set the contact's text tone
- Open Contacts and select the person you want to recognise by sound.
- Tap Edit, then Text Tone.
- Tap an available alert tone to preview it. Choose something easy to distinguish from your normal message sound.
- Tap Done to confirm the selection, and save the contact if another Done button appears.
- Ask that person for a test message after you leave the conversation screen. Check that you hear the expected tone.
This follows Apple's contact-tone instructions. If you accidentally changed Ringtone, return to the contact and select Text Tone instead. Calls and messages are separate choices, as explained in our ringtone versus notification sound guide.
If you start from a Messages conversation
Apple also documents a route from a one-person Messages conversation: tap the person's icon, then Info → Edit → Edit Contact Info → Text Tone. If Edit is absent, the guide directs you to Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact. Menu labels can differ with iOS version, so the Contacts route above is a useful starting point.
Check the contact card carefully before saving a new entry. A recognisable name and the correct phone number or email help you avoid editing the wrong person. For the current Messages path, see Apple's message-notification guide.
Use your own audio without confusing it with a download
A saved audio file and an installed iPhone tone are different things. For Apple's GarageBand method, prepare audio you are entitled to use, export it as a ringtone, and use the available assignment options. Apple includes Assign to contact after export; Standard Text Tone changes the general text tone instead.

The tone is selected, but no alert plays
- Check that Messages notifications are allowed and that the conversation is not set to Hide Alerts.
- Check Silent mode and any active Focus before concluding that the selected sound is broken.
- Reopen the contact and confirm that Text Tone still shows your chosen sound rather than None.
- Test one change at a time. First try an included tone, then your custom tone. This helps separate a notification-setting problem from a missing or unsuitable audio file.
Apple's missing Messages notifications guide explains the notification checks and Emergency Bypass. Emergency Bypass intentionally allows a contact's sound through when other notifications are silenced; it is optional and is not required just to choose a different tone.
Common questions
Will this change everyone's message sound?
The contact setting is for the selected person. For the general message sound, use the system Text Tone setting. Avoid choosing Standard Text Tone during a custom-tone export if your intention is only to personalise one contact.
Can I give the same person a different call sound too?
Yes. Reopen that person's contact card and edit Ringtone separately. Test calls and messages independently so you know which setting you changed.
