Match line density to the screen
For a Lock screen with few widgets, you can usually enjoy a more detailed composition. For a Home screen full of app icons, broad dark or light areas are easier to work with than tightly packed hatching. Try opening a folder and reading several app labels before deciding that a background works.
Brightness is another practical consideration. A mostly white illustration can feel much brighter at night than a dark one at the same display setting. Change the phone's normal brightness to a comfortable level and compare two designs under the lighting where you actually use the device.
Black and white does not automatically mean AMOLED
