Give each Mail account its own sound
You can choose a different notification sound for each email account in Apple's Mail app. Open Settings → Apps → Mail → Notifications → Customize Notifications, choose an account, turn on Alerts and select its Sounds option. Repeat for your other account with a different tone. These controls apply to Apple Mail; use the notification settings of a separate email app if that is where you read your messages.
Before starting, identify the two accounts you actually use in Mail. Decide which should have the more noticeable sound. For example, use a short bright tone for work and a softer one for personal mail. That is an editorial suggestion, rather than a requirement of iOS.
Set the first account, then repeat
- Open Settings, then Apps → Mail → Notifications.
- Make sure Allow Notifications is enabled.
- Open Customize Notifications and select the first email account.
- Enable Alerts. Open Sounds and select an available alert tone or ringtone.
- Return to the account list, select the second account and choose a different sound.

Badges show an unread count; they are a separate choice from audible Alerts. Picking a tone does not override a silenced phone. Check that the phone can make an audible notification before deciding a sound assignment failed.
Test the result one account at a time
Our suggested test is to send a fresh message from another account to the first inbox, with Mail out of the foreground. Listen for the chosen tone. Then send a separate message to the second inbox. Record which account received each message before changing any settings. This keeps a delivery problem separate from a sound problem.

If the message arrives but you hear nothing
Check Allow Notifications, then reopen that specific account's Alerts and Sounds. Review silent mode and your active Focus. If Mail is included in Scheduled Summary, examine its delivery choice when you need prompt alerts. Apple's notification settings guide explains immediate delivery, summaries and Focus delays. A saved sound and immediate delivery are different settings.
If only one conversation is quiet, inspect that thread rather than changing both account tones. Mail lets you mute a conversation using its Reply menu. It also offers Notify Me for replies you want to follow. See Apple's email notification guide.
If the email itself arrives late
Sound selection changes the alert, not when the inbox receives the message. Review the account and its Fetch New Data settings in Mail settings. Apple documents fetch scheduling in its Mail settings guide. Avoid repeatedly changing a tone while delivery is still unconfirmed.
Common questions
Will this change the sound of incoming calls?
These instructions change Mail account alerts. For broader audio choices, see our ringtone versus notification sound guide.
Can I give one person a different text alert instead?
That is a separate Messages contact setting. Follow our iPhone text tone for one contact guide.
What if I cannot find my preferred custom tone?
Choose a tone that is already available in Sounds for the initial test. If you are preparing a new tone, our GarageBand custom iPhone ringtone guide covers that separate workflow. Recheck the account's available sound list afterward; downloading an audio file alone does not establish that it is installed as a selectable tone.
